Classically trained (and still training), I was formally introduced to the concept of musical improvisation fairly late, when I was studying for my Master’s at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. I immediately loved it, especially since it proved that all the ‘mucking around’ I was doing in my practise was perfectly valid and worthwhile! Under the tutelage of David Dolan, I explored structures, styles and sounds and also extended my field of performance to work with actors, dancers, visual artists and electronic music. I was privileged to be able to attend the 2nd and 3rd meetings of the European Improvisation Intensive Project in Den Haag, Netherlands, where I had my mind and ears blown wide open on an hourly basis by the intensity of deep listening and expressive connexions that became possible amongst us as performers – all because we were improvising and striving for something intangible and yet very real. I’m currently studying the violin with Priya Mitchell and Krysia Osostowicz.
